Making Masks and Face shields

(1) This video shows how to make a mask with
a T-Shirt and explains why using a paper towel is so important when wearing
cloth masks. It’s presented by Jeremy Howard who is a research scientist at the
University of San Francisco
(I used two paper towels between the mask and
my face the last time I went shopping. I did have to speak louder because the
self check out cashier I needed to speak to told me she could not hear me.)
(2) Here is the Surgeon General with an easy
mask (that requires no sewing) that he posted on April 3rd :
You’ll also need to use a paper towel between
the mask and your face. If available you can also use ponytail holders instead
of the rubber bands he uses.
(Additionally to keep the mask from coming
apart there probably needs to be a staple or a few stitches on the last folds
where he puts each thumb right before he puts the mask on. That last fold will
need securing or you’ll constantly need to push those pieces into place. That
could place virus that may be on your hands onto your mouth or nose.
(3) This excellent instructional video is
from Operation Come Together in Clarksville Tennessee. They’ve made and
delivered thousands of masks to medical and emergency personnel. You’ll see an
excellent video that shows how you can make them with a sewing machine. They
have a sleeve where a paper towel or any type of added protection can be added.
They urgently need more volunteers to either sew or deliver them.
You can view their Facebook page at this
link or enter Operation Come Together Clarksville, TN in Facebook search
They work together with a group that makes
face shields. They have an excellent video that shows how to make them. It is
seen in the March 29th post from Kelly Sal seen on the Facebook page titled
Face Shield Makers For OCT. If you’re looking at this on a website and the
following link won’t take you to them then in Facebook search please enter Face
Shield Makers For OCT
(4) This is my favorite homemade mask because
anyone can make this using a square piece of cloth including a square cut out
of a shirt. After he ties the mask to the back of his head I would not tuck the
bottom into the top like he does UNLESS this causes a better seal. He needs a
paper towel between the mask and his face.
(5) Devices That Take Ear Loop Pressure Off of Our Ears -
One of the easiest ways to take the stress
off of your ears is to connect the ear loops behind your head using a safety
pin as seen in this video. This has three ways to take pressure off of our
ears when we wear masks often.
You can also use a larger paper clip by doing
what the young lady in the video did with the safety pin. It was a very tight
fit for me using the paper clip but I have an extra-large hat size of 7 and
3/4. Inserting the loop into the clip could break the loop if we’re not really
careful.

3D Printer Ear Savers - This fascinating link shows how to use a 3D printer and make “ear guards” to help take the pressure off health care workers ears from wearing masks all day.
This Nurses' organization page shows ten ways to relieve ear
pressure. One of my faves is in the 8th vid seen on this page. (They
use a strip of cloth cut from a T-shirt)

(6) This video shows how to put on an N95
respirator mask. I’m linking this because it shows the importance of having a
good seal around the mask. For the billions of us who don’t have access to an
N95 mask it shows one reason the use of a paper towel with our homemade mask is
so important
(7) This face mask video from JoAnn Fabrics
also shows how to sew buttons onto a headband so the ear loops can be attached.
That will relieve pressure on the ears of anyone who has to wear masks often.

(9) Here’s a mask similar to the Surgeon
General’s example :
I saw
a link to a mask made with a HEPA vacuum bag but I’m not sharing it because I
saw a post that said some of these bags have fiberglass in them and they could
cause huge health problems if they get into our lungs. I talked with the source
of that info and she read the contents of her HEPA vacuum bag and it had
fiberglass listed.
(10) This article shows which materials work best for
face masks:
Here's an important addition regarding using a coffee filter or
paper towel between our face and the homemade mask to increase the protection
that's provided. Multiple face mask makers commented on my posts suggesting the
Blue Scott Shop Original towels that are lint-free and inexpensive. Some of the
examples of using coffee filters I've seen cut the filter too small. It should
cover our mouth and our nose.
The
face coverings can lessen how much our saliva and droplets from sneezes and
coughs are spread in the air. This will provide additional protection for those
who are most at risk and for everyone. Since widespread testing is not
available we have people who are infected but don’t know it and they are
spreading the virus exponentially.
I believe any chance of our society and economy returning to how it was before COVID-19 depends on everyone wearing face coverings in public and practicing social distancing and the other recommended practices.
The Survival guide is seen at www.cvillenews.org It has important tips including (a) quarantining items we bring in (b) leaving our shoes at the door and creating a clean zone in our homes (c) using sunlight to increase our Vitamin D levels. (d) Some of the experts suggest using a disinfectant to wipe everything we buy and bring into our home. That may be helpful but it's very hard to get every square inch where the virus may be. I use an 18 gallon storage container and quarantine the nonperishable items I bring in. You can do the same with cash and mail. I insert my hand into a gallon ziplock bag to open the mailbox and grab my mail.
You will still need to figure out what you do need to wipe with disinfectant. Alcohol is one of the very best disinfectants. I imagine any residue it may leave on anything is safer than the residue left from some of the other disinfectants.
(I hope you'll print the survival website too)

I’ve set up a Facebook page with the title
Easy Face Masks and Ear Protection With No Sewing. I paid to boost that post and it's getting lots of views. I hope you'll like that page and share it.
It's a difficult effort trying to get
everyone to follow safe practices. I’ve been posting info in Facebook groups
regarding how to make face masks and info about persons who are infected but
have no symptoms so they are spreading the disease without knowing it.
Most people have liked the information but
there are some who very assertively comment they will never wear a mask unless it is required.
After my signature you'll see quotes from the CDC and others regarding
infected people with no symptoms spreading COVID-19 and how there can be an
airborne cloud of virus created by infected persons. I hope everyone reading this will view that contact
your local and State elected officials, Governor’s, and Congressional
Representatives and encourage them to do everything they can to get EVERYONE to
wear face coverings in public until this is over. As a bonus for reading this much you'll also see a few links to some fun videos
including a fantastic view of the Northern Lights from the Space Station.
I'm dyslexic from the removal of internal eye cancer. Please excuse any errors caused by my rush to get this published.

The CDC wrote 46.5 percent of passengers who were infected with COVID-19 on the
Diamond Princess had no symptoms when they were tested. They also wrote, “17.9
percent of infected persons never developed symptoms.” Both of those
quotes prove people with no symptoms are spreading the disease without knowing
it. (2) An MIT researcher wrote “a “gaseous cloud” that can carry droplets of
all sizes is emitted when a person coughs, sneezes or otherwise exhales. The
cloud is only partially mitigated by sneezing or coughing into your elbow, she
added.” (4) We can be infected by contact with our eyes!! That’s another reason
it’s very important for EVERYONE to wear face coverings in public to lessen the
amount of airborne virus that’s being spread by infected people who have no
symptoms!!
It’s
also important to wear safety goggles in public or if you don’t have them wear
warp around sunglasses or some kind of eye wear to lessen the probability of
virus making contact with your eyes.
(5)
Saliva projects out of our mouth every time we speak. If we’re infected our
saliva can infect people too but face coverings can help to prevent that.
Kentucky's
Governor wrote Hopkins County Kentucky had "six deaths linked to a revival
held in Hopkins County last month."
I
posted that in Facebook groups and comments included “I still don’t care” and
“What a joke.”
Over
half the comments supported the use of face coverings but there were some who
insisted they will never wear a face covering unless they have to.
(6)
The VA’s Office of Emergency Management wrote “The event could last 18 months
or longer and could include multiple waves of illness.”
The
U.S. Government COVID - 19 Response Plan dated March 13th said: “A pandemic
will last 18 months or longer and could include multiple waves of illness.”
(7)
With businesses being shut down and some cities having people standing in long
lines to get food this should certainly be considered serious enough that we
need everyone to wear face coverings in public.
(8)
We also have a tremendous need for the media and community leaders to
communicate to EVERYONE regarding how to make their own face coverings. If we
don’t we'll have people who won’t come out of their home because they have no
face-covering !!
Ft.
Campbell’s official Facebook page wrote “face coverings are required for anyone
that visits or works at the Commissary.”
They
also wrote “Remember, a face-covering does NOT need to be a mask, but can be
any of a number of cloth items that cover both the nose and mouth. These can
include but are not limited to bandanas, scarves, cloth, neck gaiters or
"medical type" masks.” (end of quote)
(9)
Media and community leaders need to diligently communicate and show the easiest
ways to create a homemade face covering. Until we can provide the best face
coverings for everyone we must communicate simple ways such as using a T-Shirt
to cover our mouth and nose and tie it behind our head, or using a square piece
of cloth to create a bandana.
Using
a coffee filter or paper towel between our face and the homemade mask increase
the protection that is provided. Multiple face mask makers have commented on my
posts suggesting the Blue Scott Shop Original towels that are lint-free and

Here are some bonus tips for everyone who
has read this far. I knew that every part of dandelions is edible and very
healthy. As seen in the videos there are many more plants that are too. If we
put a good salad dressing on them we may not know the difference in taste
between them and store bought greens.
